Uniform Asymptotic Expansions for Charlier Polynomials

چکیده

The asymptotic behaviour of the Charlier polynomials C (a) n (x) as nQ. is examined. These polynomials satisfy a discrete orthogonality relation and, unlike classical orthogonal polynomials, do not satisfy a second-order linear differential equation with respect to the independent variable x. As such, previous results on their asymptotic behaviour have been restricted to integral methods and consequently have been quite limited in their scope. In this paper a new approach is used, where the polynomials C (a) n (x) are not regarded as a functions of x with a as a parameter, but rather with the roles reversed via a second-order linear differential equation in which a is the (real or complex-valued) independent variable and x is a parameter. This equation has two turning points in the a plane which depend on x, and are either positive or complex conjugates, according to the values of x. Moreover, the turning points can coalesce with one another, or one with a singularity of the equation, for certain critical values of x. By using two general asymptotic theories of differential equations, one for intervals free of turning points and the other for intervals containing a double pole and a coalescing turning point, expansions are derived for C (a) n (x) involving either elementary functions or Bessel functions. Taken together, the results are uniformly valid for −. < x <.. In addition, in each case the expansions are uniformly valid for a lying in certain unbounded intervals, each of which contain [−{1−d} n, {1−d} n], where d ¥ (0, 1) is an arbitrary constant. © 2001 Academic Press

Convergent Asymptotic Expansions of Charlier, Laguerre and Jacobi Polynomials

Convergent expansions are derived for three types of orthogonal polynomials: Charlier, Laguerre and Jacobi. The expansions have asymptotic properties for large values of the degree. The expansions are given in terms of functions that are special cases of the given polynomials. The method is based on expanding integrals in one or two points of the complex plane, these points being saddle points ...

Asymptotics for the ratio and the zeros of multiple Charlier polynomials

We investigate multiple Charlier polynomials and in particular we will use the (nearest neighbor) recurrence relation to find the asymptotic behavior of the ratio of two multiple Charlier polynomials. This result is then used to obtain the asymptotic distribution of the zeros, which is uniform on an interval. We also deal with the case where one of the parameters of the various Poisson distribu...

A Distribution Family Bridging the Gaussian and the Laplace Laws, Gram-Charlier Expansions, Kurtosis Behaviour, and Entropy Features

The paper devises a family of leptokurtic bell-shaped distributions which is based on the hyperbolic secant raised to a positive power, and bridges the Laplace and Gaussian laws on asymptotic arguments. Moment and cumulant generating functions are then derived and represented in terms of polygamma functions. The behaviour of shape parameters, namely kurtosis and entropy, is investigated. In add...

Bounds for Zeros of the Charlier Polynomials

We use the method of positive quadratic forms and discrete analogues of the Laguerre inequality recently obtained by the author, to give bounds on the zeros of the Charlier polynomials, which are uniform in all parameters involved.

LOCATING THE ZEROS OF PARTIAL SUMS OF e WITH RIEMANN-HILBERT METHODS

In this paper we derive uniform asymptotic expansions for the partial sums of the exponential series. We indicate how this information will be used in a later publication to obtain full and explicitly computable asymptotic expansions with error bounds for all zeros of the Taylor polynomials pn−1(z) = Pn−1 k=0 z/ k! . Our proof is based on a representation of pn−1(nz) in terms of an integral of ...
